I had to leave regular 74 listening because I just couldn't enjoy the shows in a reasonable amount of time. (Same issue I had with 73) So both those years I relegate to the weekends.
I am actually just getting going show by show thru 1976 right now which is pretty easy to get in during one sitting and it is also a shorter year since they started touring after the hiatus in June of the year. I am really enjoying because plenty of Soundboards and they have a very distinct sound with the return of Mickey along with everybody being very fresh from the down time.
As someone who enjoys Donna this is one of her strongest years and she sings on nearly every tune and with the Dead slowing down the tempo on many tunes like FOTD and TLEO it gives her a chance to shine just like she did in JGB with Garcia ballads.
For whatever reason I didn't have very much 76 in my tape collection so I am getting to hear shows that are very wide open for me.
Chris

I typically don't enjoy Donna's contributions, but I agree about 1976: her voice has a very alluring sweetness and she's really great. I especially like the June shows.

Hey Mifraidin,

Yeah, I am up to Cap Theater (N.J. shows) and I have been enjoying the entire tour. It seems like a few of the older classics are out of the rotation TRUCKIN, He's Gone, Morning Dew but I am liking the re-works with slower tempo of FOTD, Looks Like Rain also the newer tunes like SAMSON, Lazy Lightning!, Might as Well. HELP>SLIP.
I enjoy Donna Jean. I am kinda blown away that so many seem down on her. 1976 seems like her prime with the band too me.
Also Garcia vocals are so sweet. His guitar work peaks 77 early 78 for this period but vocally he is in real good form June 76. (only issues for him are some lyric flubs here and there.)
Overall these are 4 to 5 star shows every night. Plus those smaller halls had to be a real blast!

Sorry I missed this when you posted it. Yeah, I've noticed you're a DJG fan. I don't get it, but I try to keep it in mind when I listen so I can give her the benefit of the doubt. It paid off when I found these terrific 1976 shows. For what it's worth, my son, who has a great ear, agrees with you, not me. At a minimum, I can agree that when she sounded good, she sounded great. Peace.
